Christiane Wendehorst, also a Reporter of the ALI-ELI Principles for a Data Economy project, was invited to the 52nd United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) session that took place from 8–19 July 2019 in Vienna to address the Commission and explain key features of the project. A part of the session was dedicated to reports of earlier UNCITRAL events in Paris, Rome and Bogota regarding exploratory work on legal issues relating to the digital economy.

A big theme that emerged at the events was the question of the use of data. Several experts advocated for a focus on contract as the tool for regulating the use of data. In this regard, reference was made to the Principles for a Data Economy project. The panellists from Bogota emphasised the utility of the project, and called for further studies on the effective control of data, the obligations of parties to data transactions and remedies for non-compliance.
